Bar Lover's Daughter | KC Bruner

KC Bruner may be one of country music’s newest voices, but her debut EP sounds rooted in a world that existed long before TikTok, streaming playlists and viral moments.

On this episode of Heart of the Gulch, host Tony Mendoza sits down with the Iowa-raised country artist ahead of the December 4 release of her debut EP, Bar Lover’s Daughter, for a conversation about traditional country music, growing up around her father’s bar gigs, finding her sound in Nashville and opening for Jackson Dean.

At just 22, Bruner is still early in her career. Less than two years ago, she says she didn’t even know what a demo was. Now, she’s signed with Electric Feel Records, recording with some of Nashville’s top musicians and producers and taking her music on the road.

Inside KC Bruner’s Heart of the Gulch Interview

Welcome to Heart of the Gulch, a Nashville-based interview show and country music platform featuring artists, singer-songwriters and personalities shaping music and entertainment. Host and creator Tony Mendoza sits down with KC Bruner to discuss Bar Lover’s Daughter, her Iowa roots, the Jackson Dean tour, traditional country music, songwriting and the unlikely path that brought her to Nashville.

Growing Up a Bar Lover’s Daughter

The title Bar Lover’s Daughter is more than a clever introduction to KC Bruner. It describes the environment that helped create her musical identity.

Bruner grew up around Cedar Rapids, Iowa, watching her father perform in local bars and hearing the music of Hank Williams Jr., Keith Whitley and Alan Jackson. She tells Mendoza that while people may not expect someone born in 2004 to gravitate toward that era of country music, it was simply the music she knew growing up.

Those barrooms also taught her something she now carries onto her own stages: country music works when the story connects.

Her father could perform for hours without a set list, read a room and turn strangers into an audience. Today, Bruner is learning how to translate those lessons to considerably bigger stages while opening for Jackson Dean.

Building a Traditional Country Sound in Modern Nashville

Bar Lover’s Daughter combines fiddle, steel guitar and classic-country instrumentation with the perspective of a young woman coming of age in modern Nashville.

During the interview, Mendoza describes Bruner as “the oldest sounding young person” in country music — a description she happily accepts.

Rather than using her debut EP to experiment with several unrelated sounds, Bruner says she wanted the project to establish a clear identity from the beginning. She intentionally stopped worrying about what was working on social media and focused instead on the music she actually wanted to make.

That vision came to life with producers Blake Chancey and Jack Schrepferman, who helped Bruner find a balance between the traditional country music she loves and a contemporary sound that still feels current.

For an artist who has only been pursuing music professionally for roughly two years, Bar Lover’s Daughter doesn't sound like someone searching for her lane.

It sounds like KC Bruner has already found it.

From a Secret TikTok Account to a Record Deal

The path to Nashville almost never started.

Before music became a career, Bruner followed generations of women in her family into hairstyling — something she still does between tour dates.

Then a serious health scare changed the way she thought about time.

Bruner tells Mendoza that the experience made her realize she didn't want to keep waiting to pursue something she loved. She began posting music on TikTok, but there was one catch: she created a separate account because she didn't want her friends to see her trying.

That private leap eventually became a very public career.

Today, Bruner is signed to Electric Feel Records, releasing original music, touring the country and meeting listeners who are asking for pictures and autographs after shows.

During her first run of three consecutive dates with Jackson Dean, Bruner says she discovered something else. Despite early flights, long days, learning in-ear monitors and stepping into unfamiliar situations, she woke up wanting to do it again.

Those small moments convinced her she was exactly where she was supposed to be.

Learning to Own the Stage

Bruner is still experiencing many parts of the music business for the first time.

KC Bruner opens up about finding confidence onstage while touring with Jackson Dean.

She talks about watching Nashville session musicians build songs in the studio, learning how number charts work and seeing players make musical adjustments almost instantly. She also discusses the surreal experience of realizing that musicians with major recording credits were now playing on her own project.

On the road, the education continues.

Opening for Jackson Dean has challenged Bruner to introduce herself to rooms full of people who may have never heard her music. She admits that commanding a stage is still something she is learning — including how to trust herself, talk to an unfamiliar crowd and occasionally “fake” the confidence until it becomes real.

Her father remains one of her biggest influences and biggest supporters. The same man KC once watched entertain Iowa barrooms is now following her career online, reposting videos and watching his daughter take those lessons onto stages around the country.

Who Is KC Bruner?

Near the end of the conversation, Mendoza asks Bruner which song from Bar Lover’s Daughter best answers a simple question:

Who is KC Bruner?

Her answer is “Stay Off My Mind.”

For Bruner, the song captures the balance found throughout the EP. She can write about difficult experiences and real emotion without allowing them to consume her. There can be heartbreak, but there can also be dancing, friends, barrooms and a good night out.

That balance may ultimately be the best introduction to KC Bruner.

Bar Lover’s Daughter isn't simply an attempt to recreate an older era of country music. It's the story of a young artist taking the sounds she inherited in Iowa and figuring out what they mean in her own life.

From her father's bar gigs to a secret TikTok account, Nashville recording sessions and her first major tour, KC Bruner's story is only beginning.
